20+ blue pumpkins

Blue pumpkins are select cultivars of round Curcubita winter squash with naturally blue-colored rinds. Popular varieties include the Jarrahdale Pumpkin and the Queensland Blue Pumpkin – both heirlooms from Australia.

Modern blue pumpkin introductions include the hybrid Blue Doll pumpkin and the Blue Moon pumpkin. Blue pumpkins are sought after not only for their highly ornamental appearance but also for the excellent cooking characteristics of the interior flesh of many cultivars.

1. Jarrahdale pumpkin

Jarrahdale Pumpkins are medium-large grey-blue heirloom pumpkins. These are the classic “blue” heirloom pumpkins with a slate-blue rind and are deeply ribbed. Jarrahdale heirloom pumpkins generally weigh in the range of 12-18 pounds when ripe. In addition to their ornamental value, they make excellent cooking pumpkins.

2. Blue Doll pumpkin

Blue Doll Pumpkins are medium-large hybrid pumpkins with rich blue-colored rinds. These pumpkins are deeply ribbed and reach 15-20 pounds per fruit. The blue doll pumpkin is bright orange on the inside and is well-suited for decoration and various recipes involving pies, soups, or canning.

3. Blue Moon pumpkin

Blue Moon Pumpkins are medium-sized hybrid pumpkins with a smooth blue rind. These pumpkins have a classic round, slightly flattened shape with chunky ribs. The inside of the pumpkins is yellow-orange. Each Blue Moon pumpkin weighs about 10 pounds.

4. Baby Blue Hubbard squash

Baby Blue Hubbard Squash are small, round, pumpkin-esque versions of the familiar large Hubbard Squash. Each rounded, pear-shaped squash weighs 7-9 pounds. They keep very well and are wonderful to cook with. You can use them to create all sorts of recipes, such as Hubbard Squash Soup, or as a decorative item used around the house.

5. Queensland Blue pumpkin

Queensland Blue pumpkins are large, blue-grey Australian heirloom pumpkins. These gorgeous fruits have deep ribs and a tall, flattened, almost cylindrical frame. These pumpkins store for many months due to their thick rind. Queensland Blue Pumpkins are great for decor, but can also be used to make excellent pumpkin puree.

One way to use them as decor is to create beautiful table centerpieces or front porch decor for the fall! Once pumpkin decor season has passed, you can keep them in the basement for months to use in winter and early spring soups and stews.

6. Blue Bayou pumpkin

Blue Bayou Pumpkins are a new hybrid pumpkin variety with a blue rind and very wide heirloom-like ribs. These gorgeous pumpkins are perfect both for decorating with and for cooking with. The hybrid plants are very productive and resistant to disease (even in humid growing conditions).

7. Marina Di Chioggia pumpkin

Marina Di Chioggia Pumpkins are medium-sized, blue-green Italian heirloom pumpkins. These Italian heirlooms weigh about 10-12 pounds each and are known for their warty, wrinkly, almost bubbly rind. Marina Di Chioggia is known to create excellent dishes and snacks (particularly for roasted pumpkin seeds).

8. Triamble pumpkin

Triamble Pumpkins are medium-sized blue-green pumpkins with a unique three-lobed shape. These heirloom pumpkins weigh about 8 pounds when ripe and make just as good cooking pumpkins as they do ornamentals.

9. Tokyo Pumpkin

Tokyo Pumpkins (Tokyo Blue Squash) are small, blue-green heirloom pumpkins from Japan. This early-maturing fruit typically weighs about 5 pounds when ripe, and is known for its incredibly smooth texture and sweet taste when cooked.

10. Crown Prince pumpkin

Crown Prince Pumpkins are small hybrid pumpkins with a smooth, silver-blue rind. They store very well and are highly rated for taste. Ripe fruits weigh about 5 pounds.

11. Royal Blue pumpkin

Royal Blue Pumpkins are medium-large, flattened wrinkly blue-green pumpkins with thick stems and an heirloom appearance. When ripe, the fruit is about 14″ wide and weighs about 14 pounds each. They stack well and are gorgeous ornamental blue pumpkins.

12. Shishigatani pumpkin

Shishigatani Pumpkins are medium-sized, dark green-blue heirloom pumpkins from Kyoto, Japan. This pumpkin has a unique hourglass shape, with a ribbed, warty rind. Shishigatani Pumpkin is a gourmet culinary heirloom pumpkin known for its fine-grained flesh and balanced, earthy flavor.

13. Buen Gusto De Horno pumpkin

Buen Gusto De Horno Pumpkins, also called Calabaza Buen Gusto, are medium-sized, green-blue heirloom pumpkins cultivated in Spain. These ancient pumpkins have a very wrinkled, thick rind and deep ribs. Individual pumpkins weigh 10-15 pounds. As the name suggests, they are known for their great taste as a cooked pumpkin.

14. Silver Moon pumpkin

Silver Moon Pumpkins are small-medium hybrid pumpkins with a blue-white rind. They really do look a bit silver-colored on the outside, while the inside flesh is a rich, dark orange. They have a flattened shape with wide ribs. Each ripe Silver Moon Pumpkin weighs about 5-6 pounds.

15. Crespo squash

Crespo Squash is an extremely warty green-blue heirloom pumpkin from South America. They are known as excellent cooking pumpkins but are also highly ornamental. Many other blue-green wrinkled heirlooms are thought to be descended from Crespo Squash, including Buen Gusto de Horno and Marina di Chioggia.

16. Blue Prince pumpkin

Blue Prince Pumpkins are medium-sized blue pumpkins with a smooth, slightly-ribbed rind. Each Blue Prince Pumpkin weighs about 9-10 pounds. The vigorous hybrid plants produce 7-9 of these pumpkins each! Blue Prince is another variety that is great for both cooking and decorating. Blue Prince Pumpkins were named an All-America Selections variety in 2020.

17. Blue Ice pumpkin

Blue Ice Pumpkins are medium-large hybrid pumpkins with a blue-white rind. These pumpkins have a slightly flattened shape, and smooth, irregular peels. Ripe Blue Ice Pumpkins weigh 15-20 pounds each.

18. Sugar Cup pumpkin

Sugar Cup Pumpkins are medium-sized, richly-colored, green-blue pumpkins with an heirloom appearance. They have very thick stems and some fruits have turban-like buttons on the bottom. Ripe fruits weigh about 8 pounds each.

19. Blue Harvest pumpkin

Blue Harvest Pumpkins are small-medium pumpkins with wide ribs and a blue rind. These 7-8 pound hybrid pumpkins look like small Jarrahdale heirlooms. Plants are productive and disease resistant.

20. Blue Delight pumpkin

Blue Delight Pumpkins are large blue hybrid pumpkins with a flattened shape and wide ribs. Ripe fruits weigh 25-30 pounds each. The plants are resistant to powdery mildew and do well in humid growing environments. These pumpkins are also wonderful cooking pumpkins.

21. Jamboree pumpkin

Jamboree Pumpkins are medium-sized grey-blue hybrid pumpkins with a smooth, slightly-ribbed rind. Ripe fruits weigh about 9-11 pounds. These squash are great keepers with wonderful flesh for cooking.
